Welcome to our class!
I am very excited about this upcoming school year! I can’t wait to get to know you and your child. I thought I'd share my background info with you. I am an BRHS graduate (Go Wildcats!) and I graduated from Auburn University with my Bachelors degree. I then graduated 2x from Auburn University at Montgomery ending with my Education Specialist degree in Math. I am currently pursuing my doctorate in Educational Psychology at Auburn University. I have taught pre-algebra for 11 years and I truly love my job! The "light bulb" moments are the reason I teach!
I believe that cooperative learning is very beneficial to students learning; therefore groups will be used often for discovery learning activities, test reviews, and homework problems.
I truly believe that parental involvement is very important to your child’s education. I encourage each and every one of you to visit our classroom anytime. With your support, I know that your child will benefit greatly as you and I will.
Grading System
Practice makes perfect, therefore in math you need to practice. There will be homework the majority of the week, with the exception of Friday. Homework will be checked the following day for effort. This means that as long as you have completed every problem and shown appropriate work, you will receive a 100. If you do not have your homework then you may bring it back the next 70% credit. If you are absent then you have five school days to make up any assignments.
Your child’s notebook is very important. Every Monday your child will write down the weekly agenda so you and they will know what to expect in the upcoming week. Upon entering the classroom your child will go quietly to their seat and begin their warm-ups. The warm-ups will be located in the back of their composition notebook and will be graded at random. We will then review the warm-up as a whole class. The front of the composition notebook will be for notes and classwork. If given homework, it will be checked daily so while working on the warm-up the student should place their homework out on their desk to be checked.
The nine weeks average will consist of:
· 56% for major grades, such as tests and major projects
· 24% for activities, such as homework, classwork, warm-ups, group activities, and notebook quizzes
· 20% for benchmark tests
You can easily access your child’s grades and discipline through INOW with your personal pin number. Your personal pin number may be obtained through the ACMS office; 256-234-8661. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me;my planning period is fifth period (1:00-2:00) and my email address is scason@acsk12.net.
